As IT teams in higher education ready themselves for another challenging academic year, one of their top priorities is keeping data safe while reducing cyber threats. Password management plays a critical role in that mission. With a high volume of rotating students, staff, and faculty working on-campus, remote, or in a hybrid environment, IT struggles to protect against evolving cyber attacks. And these are no idle threats: According to our new report, a staggering 88% of institutions suffered an IT security infringement because of poor password management - this year alone.
Based on an International Data Group (IDG) survey of 300 IT professionals in higher education, our new report, Password Hygiene in Higher Education: Risks, Solutions, and Strategies, evaluates the impact of poor password practices and ways IT teams in higher education are solving the problem.
The survey found that nearly half of IT professionals (46%) cited stolen credentials as a chief security concern. Similarly, 44% of respondents cite the breach of financial or personal information as one of the most concerning dangers of poor password management at their institution. Unfortunately, risky password behavior is all too common among faculty, students, and staff. Survey responses show that they frequently reuse passwords, select weak passwords, or share passwords insecurely. Fortunately, a campus-wide password management solution can help by simplifying password management for everyone while providing IT teams with greater visibility and actionable oversight, from advanced reporting tools to customizable security policies.
In our new report, we explore:
- The importance of passwords in cybersecurity
- The damaging impact of poor password hygiene
- Common password mistakes in higher education
- How institutions are addressing password risks
- How priorities vary by size and location
- Password management must-haves in higher education
