Protecting the security and privacy of customer data is vital to our mission, and over the past 18 months, we have invested significant time and effort hardening our security, without sacrificing user experience, while also improving overall security operations and privacy.&nbsp;

Those enhancements continue today with the encryption of URLs in LastPass vaults.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Why are we making this change &ndash; and why now?&nbsp; Read on for background and updates on URL encryption, how it works, and why we believe it will help our users better protect their vaults.&nbsp;

<h3 class="p1" style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); margin: 0px;">The journey to URL encryption&nbsp;</h3>
Today, every time you use LastPass, the URL of the website you are visiting in your web browser needs to be matched against entries saved in your LastPass vault to determine whether fields can and should be auto filled.&nbsp; To accomplish this, the URLs from your web browser are matched against unencrypted URL fields within the vault. Once a match is made, LastPass performs its magic.&nbsp; 
 
The reason URLs have historically been unencrypted within vaults is that when LastPass was first created back in 2008, technology looked dramatically different from today. Decryption was a computationally and memory intensive action that adversely impacted performance on low-powered PCs and mobile devices, often resulting in sluggish user experience and battery drain on mobile devices.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;
To maximize performance and user experience, LastPass did not encrypt URLs in the vaults to ensure the performance and user experience was acceptable. Over time, additional URL matching functionality, such as the equivalent domains feature, were built atop this logic.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Thankfully, those computer and memory constraints no longer exist with most of today's devices. LastPass can now safely encrypt all URL-related fields in your vault without any adverse user experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h3 class="p1" style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); margin: 0px;">Why does URL encryption matter?&nbsp;</h3>
It is possible for URLs to contain details about the nature of the accounts associated with your stored credentials (e.g., banking, email, social media).&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Encrypting URLs associated with your accounts, just like every other private field in the LastPass vault, will expand our <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.lastpass.com/security/zero-knowledge-security" target="_blank">zero-knowledge</a> architecture and enhance customer privacy, while also helping to further mitigate risk by ensuring that URLs related to specific services or accounts saved within their vault remain private. &nbsp;
&nbsp;
Adding URL encryption required us to re-engineer LastPass to refactor the way nearly every client and back-end component works. That kind of change does not happen overnight, but we have made significant progress, and we are excited to begin delivering URL encryption, which will require some action on the part of our customers in order to take effect. &nbsp;

<h3 class="p1" style="color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); margin: 0px;">What should customers expect?&nbsp;</h3>
There will be two phases for implementing URL encryption: The first phase is expected to be completed in June, with rollout beginning in August. At that time, both personal users and business admins will receive emails with prescriptive details as to what to expect, and we will begin automatically encrypting the primary URL fields of existing accounts stored within their vaults, as well as any new or edited accounts after the change is made. We will also use this as an opportunity to delete a duplicate and unneeded legacy URL field.&nbsp; 
 
The follow-on phase, currently expected to be completed during the latter half of 2024, will focus on automatically encrypting the remaining six URL-related fields stored in LastPass vaults. You can find the complete list of all eight URL-related fields <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://support.lastpass.com/s/document-item?language=en_US&amp;bundleId=lastpass&amp;topicId=LastPass/incident-data.html&amp;_LANG=enus" target="_blank">here.</a>

It&rsquo;s important to note that there are no current actions for customers and admins to take. In the coming month we will communicate step-by-step instructions to both personal plan users and business plan users explaining how to complete the initial URL encryption upgrade, as well as how to prepare for encryption of all remaining URL fields in the vault later this year. We&rsquo;ll also offer prescriptive guidance for functionality that is specific to LastPass Business plan admins.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today, our journey to passwordless continues with FIDO2 compatible authenticators as additional options to passwordlessly login to the LastPass vault on desktop.

<h3>Taking one small step toward passwordless</h3>
In June 2022, we launched the LastPass Authenticator as our first passwordless login option. By pairing your LastPass Authenticator to your LastPass vault, you can enjoy one-tap login that’s password-free, which means no more typing out your master password to access your desktop vault.

But this was just the first step.

Now, in addition to LastPass Authenticator, all users can choose from an array of <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/fido2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FIDO2 compatible</a> authenticators for a passwordless login to their vault -- which include biometrics and hardware keys.
<h3>It’s your journey, too – choose your type of passwordless login</h3>
With FIDO2 compatible authenticators, you can now choose how you want to authenticate, removing the master password from your typical login process.

Besides your LastPass Authenticator, passwordless login to your vault on desktop devices can be accessed through:

 	<li>Any FIDO2 compatible hardware key, like Yubi-Key or Feitian Keys</li>

FIDO2 compatible authentication mechanisms use WebAuthN protocol, the leading passwordless security standard, so you can rest assured your login is secure.

With FIDO2 Authenticators, LastPass Free, Premium, Families, Teams and Business customers will have more options when it comes to setting up passwordless login to the vault on desktop browsers and Chrome and Firefox extensions, Safari browser extension and desktop application support is coming soon.

As LastPass continues on its journey to passwordless, we&rsquo;re excited to announce that support for passkeys is coming soon. You&rsquo;ll be able to create, save, and access passkeys right in your LastPass vault, alongside your passwords and other secure credentials. And because LastPass is a password manager with universal access, you&rsquo;ll be able to sync and share across devices, browsers, and operating systems &ndash; it won&rsquo;t matter where your passkey originated or what device you&rsquo;re using to log in.

<h3>What is a passkey?</h3>
Simply put: A passkey is a login method that completely eliminates the need for a password. It is truly passwordless authentication. And, unlike passwords, passkeys are easy to use, and always strong and phishing resistant.
Technically speaking, a passkey is a cryptographic key pair consisting of one public key (shared with the relying party website) and one private key (stored only on the end-user device) to authenticate the user and login. Both keys are needed to authenticate, meaning that without physical access to the end-user device, access to a passkey-protected account is impossible. If the relying party website is breached, for example, there is no risk of stolen data since the website only stores the public key.&nbsp;
When you set up a passkey to access a website, the typical password authentication mechanism is replaced with the cryptographic key pair, meaning there is truly no password involved, even in the backend.&nbsp;
<h3>How do passkeys work with your LastPass vault?</h3>
Storage and use of a passkey to log into sites in your vault will closely mirror the login experience of using a password &ndash; but what is happening in the background is much more secure. Cryptographic key pairs use the strong user authentication framework of <a href="https://fidoalliance.org/passkeys/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">FIDO2 industry standards and protocols</a>, which means you&rsquo;re meeting some of the strongest security standards when it comes to passwordless authentication.&nbsp;

Since its <a href="https://blog.lastpass.com/2021/03/introducing-the-new-admin-console-adoption-dashboard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launch in 2020,</a> LastPass has continually developed its Admin Console to streamline and improve your admin experience, giving you greater control while increasing your visibility into user adoption. In 2021, we introduced the Adoption Dashboard, centered around user enrollment and adoption. 

Now, in 2023, we’ve streamlined the Adoption Dashboard by repositioning your adoption and security data as two separate, standalone pages for better, more focused visibility into user behavior for both categories.

<h3>Adoption page vs. security page: What’s the difference?</h3>
Understanding adoption data is crucial to helping onboard and retain users. Equally critical is the enforcement of security best practices to ensure individuals are fully using LastPass – for the reason you implemented it, once they’re onboarded.

In the enhanced Adoption Dashboard, the adoption page is now focused primarily on the user adoption journey, which includes the sending and tracking of invitations to LastPass, understanding usage within your business, and identifying actionable areas of improvement, all of which can be viewed over time to track progress. The security page, on the other hand, deals primarily with user password hygiene, which involves measuring security scores to better understand the security posture of your entire organization.
<h3>New Security Leaderboard!</h3>
Currently, adoption and security data can be found on the same page. This update to the Adoption Dashboard provides a separate, de-cluttered view of both security and adoption on two standalone pages, giving you, the admin, a more comprehensive view of both. For example, your goals as an admin may first focus on driving adoption when rolling out LastPass based on business needs or goals, then increasing security once users have been onboarded.

You can now find a brand-new Security Leaderboard on the security page, which tracks employee progress by incentivizing strong password hygiene among users. Your security leaderboard will show you who in the organization has a “high - green, average - yellow, or low - red” security score. You can identify individuals who need improvement, and champion those with strong scores. Gamifying security can be a fun yet informative way to encourage and reward strong password hygiene for your users.

With LastPass, you don’t need to be a cybersecurity expert to take online security into your own hands. The LastPass <a href="https://www.lastpass.com/features/security-dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Security Dashboard</a> – now available to all LastPass users – is your command center as you navigate your digital life. In one view, you can see your weak and reused passwords, along with your overall Security Score, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA), and monitor any email addresses that may have been compromised in a data breach.

Let’s take a closer look at each element of your personal command center for digital security – the Security Dashboard – and how you can take charge of your digital life today. 
<h3>Keep tabs on your Security Score</h3>
Your personal score of one through 100% analyzes your use of security best practices, including the strength of your vault passwords and MFA and Dark Web Monitoring usage. So, what should you do if your score isn’t as high as you’d like it to be? 

A quick way to increase your score is to update any weak or reused passwords you may be currently using (you’ll see this list next to your Security Score). Make sure that your passwords are:

<h3>Enable MFA</h3>
Once you’ve strengthened your passwords, add an extra layer of security to your LastPass vault by <a href="https://support.lastpass.com/help/enable-multifactor-authentication-lp010002" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turning on multi-factor authentication</a> (MFA). In addition to your master password, MFA works by requiring a second piece of evidence to verify your identity when logging in to your account. Examples of these include your fingerprint (something you are) or a time-sensitive verification code (something you have). 

The more security layers you wrap around your vault, the harder it is for hackers to access your information. LastPass offers its own MFA solution with the <a href="https://support.lastpass.com/help/lastpass-authenticator-lp030014" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LastPass Authenticator app</a>. Once you’ve paired it to your LastPass vault, you’ll be able to enjoy one-tap login for secure and instant access.
<h3>Shed light on the Dark Web</h3>
The Dark Web can be a blind spot for many. Nearly one-third (32%) of people don’t know what the dark web is, and 87% would not know if their personal information was there, according to our latest <a href="https://www.lastpass.com/resources/ebook/psychology-of-passwords-2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Psychology of Passwords</a> report. 

Personal information includes your social security number, driver’s license number, credit card numbers, medical records, or passport, among many other pieces of highly sensitive information --  the information that hackers want to have. 

Simply enable <a href="https://www.lastpass.com/features/dark-web-monitoring" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dark Web Monitoring</a> once and it will continuously monitor your email addresses within a database of breached credentials – all in the background. You’ll receive an alert immediately if any of your email addresses have been compromised. You can then update your credentials in real time and stay one step ahead of bad actors. 

You’ll also receive a one-time, one-year check up on your dark web exposure -- an instant retrospective on any accounts found on the dark web in the past year.
