How to Change Your Yahoo Password

Shireen StephensonPublishedJanuary 20, 2025

In a world where most people worry about being hacked, a quiet revolution is brewing. The world’s top platforms are winning the data security war in creative, powerful ways. On the Yahoo platform, Yahoo Plus Secure keeps users safe as they shop, surf, socialize, and stream their favorite sports events. If you aren’t familiar with Yahoo+ Secure, it takes just a few minutes to see how this powerful suite of security solutions can protect you.

But first, we’ll start with the reason you’re here: how to change your Yahoo password, the gateway to all Yahoo services.

How to Change Your Yahoo Password

How to Change Your Yahoo Mail Password from a Web Browser

Steps to access account settings or account info on yahoo.com

According to NIST’s updated guidelines, a password should only be changed after a known compromise or security incident.

  • To change your Yahoo password, you’ll need to access your account settings:
  • First, sign in to your Yahoo account by entering your username, email, or mobile phone number.
  • If you’ve enabled 2-step verification, follow the prompts to get your verification code.
  • Don’t have 2-step verification? Here's how to enable it for extra sign-in security: Once you’re signed in, hover over your profile icon at the top right corner of the page and click “Manage Your Accounts.”
  • On the next screen, tap “Account Info.” You’ll see various settings at the top, such as “Security,” “Recent Activity,” and “Privacy Controls.”
  • Click “Security.” This account security page lets you turn on 2-step verification, add account recovery options, change your password, and manage your device notifications.

Change your account password or perform a password reset

To change your password on the “Security” page, scroll down to click “Change Password” under “How you sign in to Yahoo.” You’ll see a pop-up asking you to create a new password. Once you’ve finished, click “Continue.” Another pop-up will inform you that your new password is now active.

But what if you’ve forgotten your password and need to do a password reset?

  • Head to the Yahoo Sign-In Helper page
  • Enter one of the account recovery items, such as recovery phone number, recovery email address, or mobile number.
  • Click “Continue” to get a six-digit verification code.
  • After entering the code, click on the account you want to sign in to. If you have 2-step verification enabled, follow the prompts to complete the sign-in process and then create your new password.

Changing Your Yahoo Password on Mobile Devices

Steps to change your Yahoo password via iPhone or Android:

You can use the Yahoo Mail app to change your password on both iPhone and Android.

  • First, download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and then open it.
  • Sign in to your Yahoo account.
  • Tap your profile icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Click “Settings” and then “Manage Accounts.”
  • Next, click “Account Info” and then “Security.” You may be prompted to enter your device passcode if you have an Android phone; iPhone users can verify their identity with Touch ID.
  • After doing so, you’ll be taken to the Security settings page, where you can tap “Change Password” to create a new password.

*If you have Account Key enabled, you’ll have to disable it before you can change your password. See how to disable it on this Yahoo help page. *

Ensuring account or recovery info is up to date on mobile phones

You’ll want to ensure your recovery info is updated. Here’s why:

  • If you forget your password, you’ll need your recovery phone number or alternate email address to reset your password.
  • Yahoo sends change notifications to both your Yahoo mail account and recovery email account.
  • Expired or outdated recovery info can lead to you being locked out of your Yahoo account.
  • If your account is temporarily locked after multiple unsuccessful logins, you’ll need your recovery info to regain access.

Enhance Yahoo Security with LastPass

Importance of implementing strong passwords and authentication measures

The RockYou2024 leak instantly exposed 10 billion unique passwords, exponentially increasing the risk of attackers using them in credential stuffing attacks. The more common or weak the password, the higher likelihood attackers will be successful in cracking them.

With your password, they can access all your Yahoo account services.

Thus, strong passwords and authentication measures like 2-step verification are critical lines of defense against account takeovers.

Avoid losing your passwords with LastPass

This brings us back to Yahoo Plus Secure, which includes McAfee anti-virus protection and LastPass password protection

Secure your Yahoo account with passkeys

Passkeys eliminate the need for passwords altogether, which means you only need one easy authentication method to access your Yahoo account.

With a passkey, you can use your face, fingerprint, or lock screen PIN to sign in on mobile or desktop. If available, passkeys will be listed as an authentication method on your “Security” page.

If passkeys aren’t currently available for your account, Yahoo Plus Secure/LastPass Premium is your best defense against locked accounts, identity theft, and financial fraud.
