Logging Into Android Apps Just Got Easier

We’ve been hard at work to bring the latest in login technology to our Android experience. We’re excited to announce that the LastPass app for Android now autofills logins for your mobile apps, as well as websites in Chrome for Android.

Our updated Android app, which is part of our Premium service, is now available at the Google Play Store. Note that the new feature is available for apps on devices running Android 4.1 and later, and for Chrome on devices running Android 4.3 and later. Note that on Android 4.1 and 4.2, LastPass cannot autofill into apps, and will show copy buttons instead, and some apps may require that you manually paste the data.

So what makes this new functionality so awesome? It brings the same LastPass experience you’re used to on the desktop to all of your mobile apps and Chrome. When you launch a mobile app, LastPass can now detect that a username and password field are shown, and hover with a prompt for you to select a matching login. The new functionality eliminates more typing and tapping, making the mobile experience that much more fluid.

How It Works

To get started, the latest release of LastPass needs to be installed on your Android device. Once you’ve logged into LastPass, you will be prompted to enable the new functionality.

Then, you can launch an app of your choice from your homescreen. Once that app is launched, LastPass will detect the username and password fields. A pop-up will be displayed, prompting you to select a matching login that is stored in your vault.

Or, the prompt lets you know that no matching logins are stored for that app. If LastPass can’t find a matching login for the app, it will let you search your vault.

If you find the site login you need after searching your vault, LastPass will store that association, so it will match the entry in your vault automatically next time you use that specific app.

We’re also crowdsourcing app associations! Share your association with other LastPass users, and benefit from others sharing theirs, so LastPass can match more apps with sites automatically. When you confirm an app association, you will see an option to share it with other LastPass users.

New to LastPass on Android? Our app can be trialed for free for 2 weeks, simply search for LastPass at the Google Play store on your device and login with your LastPass account to start the trial. We also support the Dolphin HD and Firefox mobile browsers with LastPass addons, both part of our Premium service as well.

If you’re ready to upgrade to LastPass Premium, you can do so at https://lastpass.com/premium.php at any time.

    1. Cool, however with Galaxy S4 had to clear clipboard before it worked properly. Anyway to have LP automatically clear the clipboard before it writes the un/pw to it?

    3. I'd assume it's because Apple doesn't let apps talk to each other in order to maintain the tight security they've enjoyed.

Loosening the control like Google has done with Android may allow bad apps onto your system (which is why Google has maintained that you install apps only from the play store), but it also allows for awesome and powerful apps like this.

Nice update! I've been waiting for some kind of update like this from you guys! This is everything I wanted LastPass to be for Android! Good job!

    2. Depends on your usage of course, and you will vary but as an anecdote: using it as I needed ~15 times yesterday both in apps and using the app to look up a few things it utilized 3% of my battery over 19 hours. Generally the feature is not computationally intense.

  10. Tried to use it on my Credit Union account app. Their app fills in the username for me, so I asked lastpass to fill in the password. It jumped to the username portion and put the password before the username and didn't fill in the password section. So I tried removing the username, allowing lastpass to fill in both and it doesn't work at all in that scenario.

    8. Agree that this is a game changing feature in concept, but I'm finding it a total mess on my Verizon Note 3. Tried it with a slew of big name apps with no luck. Pastes other clipboard contents into username fields, pastes wrong password, etc. The Amazon app doesn't prompt me to form fill. Let me know if I can help with other specific app reports.

    9. I'm seeing similar behavior on Verizon Samsung S3. It pastes the contents of the clipboard into the username field in every app I have tried (half dozen or so). This could be an awesome feature if this gets corrected.

  18. The new feature to fill password into apps doesn't work on the Note 3 with Android 4.4. LastPass does pop-up and recognizes apps where I have an account for the most part, but when I tap on it, the first time nothing happens. And then if I tap between username and password, it'll pop up again, but when I tap it again, it puts my password into both fields. I hope this can be fixed. I really want to use this feature.

The interesting things is that in Chrome, it seems to work perfectly and also a little differently. Once I tap the account, it tells me to press the Return key on my keyboard. Once I do that, everything enters perfectly. This doesn't happen on any of the apps and even if I press Return after tapping the account, it doesn't enter the password or username the first time and it still enters the password in both fields if I try tapping it a second time.

  20. I've been wishing for this feature but assumed it was impossible!

With my credit union app, it doesn't seem to work quite right. Sometimes the LastPass dialog doesn't pop up unless I exit and then reopen the app. And when it does pop up, it doesn't offer to fill in the fields -- the only options are to copy the ID and password to the clipboard.

    2. You can also tap the password field to show the fill dialog. Also, assuming you're using Android 4.3+, it still happens that some apps don't allow direct filling, in which case we detect that and show the copy buttons instead.

    3. I'll open a support ticket so the issue can be properly tracked. Thanks!

  53. Seems way to early for wide release if all the known samsung device issues.. those are how much of the android market now? Just really poor implementation, and the idea that it is somehow okay if it turns on the Talkback feature on Samsungs (which is obviously a deal breaker for most users) or that it is a Samsung or an Android issue and not a glitch in the app is just really bad. The latest round of UI changes that made the desk top browser plug-ins somehow less easily used was first, and now this?!

Is there a chance that you bring the Chrome support to older Android versions (4.1)?

  97. Now that this killer upgrade has been rolled out i wanted to check it out again, but the app still says my trial period has elapsed. Shouldn't it have been reset for everyone?

    1. I have the same situation-just says my trial has elapsed and I should upgrade to paid plan. Going to try uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that resets it.

    2. Since my previous comment I've now received an email (well two actually) notifying me that my trial had started and I can now log in to the app.

  98. At last! Yes, copying password was a pain in the a... Most irritating was situation on low memory phone where you needed to get to lastpass app to get password but your previous app was killed to regain memory.
    Thanks!

  100. Great, we have been waiting for this so long. LastPass is getting better and better

  101. A great feature! Just a quick bug report though:
On the LinkedIn app the Username and Password fields are flipped (i.e. it puts the password in the username field and the username in the password field.

  103. Unsolved Problem: enabling LP service in accessibility menu disables all secondary input languages in the keyboard!!

  104. When will this be available for Android 2.3? Not all phones are capable of upgrading. Using Samsung Galaxy Ace

  105. Tried this last night and it worked seamlessly. This is a huge step forward functionally for what is already a fantastic desktop product, well done for getting it working so well.

  106. What is the latest version number of the Android App? I don't see it mentioned in your article anywhere. I think I have 3.1.3

  109. Well done! Auto-fill was my most missed feature being used to its convenience with LP desktop. I've even given family members a premium acct for b-day present.

  110. It doesn't work on my GS3 (running 4.3) for Chase, Citi, Amex Bluebird or Ally apps. Discover and Home Depot are only ones I found it does work for. :(

    1. Interesting as the Chase app works on my GS3 (running 4.3 on Verizon). What doesn't work in the Quick Deposit function, which require me to use the GS3 menu to access the function and that has now been taken over by LP. I have to copy notification log on the old way if I want to use that function. I'd love to see that fixed.

  111. Awesome! This was just the missing bit to be almost perfect.
LP , at the end of android trial, i will subscribe subscription for life!

  114. Would have loved to install this app but the TalkBalk issue on my S2 made it a dealbreaker :-(

  115. This is really a fantastic feature. I did find though that it does not work well on apps such as US Bank app that have username and password on different screens. On the username screen, LastPass did not popup which is not a big deal. On the password screen, it does popup but Fill puts in the username instead of the password. It would be nice if there were options other than Fill such as Copy Username, Copy Password. Maybe long-pressing on the item could bring up a list of options just like it does in the LastPass app itself?

  116. Great idea but LP seems to be reversing user i.d. with password in my Elevations Credit Union app. It's putting user i.d. into password field so then I have to copy & paste which sort of defeats the idea.

  117. As a Last Pass Premium user, I was eager to try this update. LP has been loaded on my SIII for some time and I find it cumbersome at best.

However, while trying to follow your video, I CANNOT get LP to work as in the video. "Tap" on what box?
After opening LP I have tapped all over the screen. It only opens links. Why not put this access point into the Preferences section?

  118. For Netflix, when the Fill with LastPass dialog pops up and I click on my saved entry, another dialog pops up asking if I want to copy my username or password.

    ReplyDelete
  119. It seems a tad on the buggy side to me. When I went to try it on Netflix, it pasted in some big long URL from something that wasn't my credentials into both the username and password. When I cleared the fields and tried again, it typed my password into both the username and password fields. I tried it again with the same result. I ended up having to type my username in manually which was rather annoying.
