LastPass 3.0 Is Here: New Design, New Features!

Excited doesn’t begin to express how we feel about introducing LastPass 3.0. Our new release features an updated, clean design across the LastPass browser addons, the iOS and Android mobile apps, and our website itself. We’ve worked hard to make LastPass easier to use and less intrusive.

Highlights from LastPass 3.0 include:

  • Revamped user experience and user interface
  • Field icon menus for easy access to logins and LastPass tools
  • A Shared Family Folder for up to 5 users
  • Expanded Shared Folder features for LastPass Enterprise
  • A revamped LastPass for Applications
  • Secure Note history, to track changes to your notes
  • Windows 8.1 support
  • and more

New Design, New Experience

In LastPass 3.0, we’ve changed the way LastPass notifies and interacts with you. LastPass focuses more on the website's fields, so there are less steps to get what you need. We're also phasing out the notification bars at the top of the browser.

A clickable icon now appears on the website's fields. The LastPass field icon is dynamic, showing you options that match what you would want to do with that field. If it’s a login form, you’ll see your matching logins for that site.

If you don’t have any logins stored for that site, LastPass will ask if you want to save it:

If it’s a “create password” field, you’ll see the Password Generator:

If it’s a shopping form, you’ll see your Profiles:

The field icon menu expands so you can quickly access all the main LastPass features:

The LastPass browser addon menu has been simplified, and we've added immediate access to search, so you can quickly find the sites and notes you need:

The vault has also been updated to reflect the new look and feel:

Improved Mobile Experience

The Premium mobile apps for Android and iOS now have a "browser-forward experience", meaning the browser is integrated with the vault for easy site searching and launching. The vault on both platforms is easily searchable, where you can add, edit, and update your passwords at a moment’s notice.

The LastPass browser now has quicker access to your logins and Profiles. You can add sites easily, generate new passwords quickly, and enjoy a more seamless mobile experience overall.

LastPass Shared Family Folder

We've streamlined sharing for our users. LastPass Premium users can now use a Shared Family Folder with up to 5 family members to manage and access joint accounts. Each LastPass user can be added to the Shared Family Folder, and the logins or notes can then be dragged-and-dropped into the Shared Folder.

Updates are then kept in sync across all users sharing the folder. See our full article in the user manual for how to get started; only the user creating the folder needs to have LastPass Premium.

Updates for LastPass Enterprise

LastPass Enterprise administrators can now give Shared Folder access to non-Enterprise LastPass users. Up to 3, non-Enterprise users can be given access to any Enterprise Shared Folder. The new functionality is particularly useful for those who may need to give contractors or part-time employees temporary access to sites. LastPass for Applications has also received a number of improvements.

We're Thrilled to Reach Another Milestone!

We are so thrilled to share LastPass 3.0 with our community. We hope you enjoy the clean design and less intrusive experience. As always, we owe a big “thank you” to our community for your continued support. We're committed to the ongoing improvement of our service, and strive to  provide a great experience for our users. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Thanks,
The LastPass Team

FAQs

How do I disable the "ticker" in the icon?
From the LastPass Icon > Preferences >  Notifications, uncheck the "Show Matching Sites Count in Toolbar" option.

How do I move my matching sites list back to the main icon menu?
In the LastPass Icon > Preferences > Advanced, select the Show matching sites in top level menu" option.

Can I go back to the old notification bars?
First, be sure that you're clicking the icons that now appear in your username and password fields to try to enter your data. If you've tested it and you don't like clicking the field icons, you can enable the old notification bars in the LastPass Icon >  Preferences > Notifications, and disable the field icons from there. We'd appreciate specific feedback so we can keep fine-tuning our new release.

    4. The vault design has not changed much at all except they've made everything look big and bulky presumably for benefit of touch screen device and windows 8. I'm hacked off they've suddenly changed this especially while currently using Lastpass in my browser. The best user experience is to enable user free choice and tools to enable users to customize design to their personal preference

And now, what's with the extra mouse click to see "show matching sites".

And now it looks more like Chrome, even in Firefox.

    3. Are you not seeing the gray asterisks? The icons that show in the username and password fields are clickable and should show your matching sites - let us know if they are not showing with the new update.

    4. Godaddy forwards you to country specific pages (e.g. uk.godaddy.com). If your password is stored against www.godaddy.com, then Lastpass doesn't trigger. If you change the URL in your LastPass Vault to your country specific url (e.g. https://uk.godaddy.com), then it works!

    1. Hi!
I'd like to add that in the previous version (Chrome extension), I was able to completely hide any obvious password-/form-fill suggestions (like the top banner or the highlighted input fields), in order to make the extension "harder" to use, thus preventing strangers from _quickly_ logging into my accounts within an office environment. This is now--seemingly--impossible, as the asterisk icon still shows up in password fields, even with the "Click Icons in Fields" setting OFF.

By the way, your documentation does not reflect (all?) UI changes.

      Delete
    2. You are looking for a wrong solution.
You should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS lock your computer when you step away. You can do it simply by pressing Win-L keys to lock it.

      Delete
    3. Right.
In fact, I'm looking for an additional precaution, which used to work great until update 3.0.
As you probably know, windows logon security can be dodged with as little as a USB dongle.
I realize that someone capable enough will also know their way around lastpass, but at least the extension did not seem as obvious before (without inline icons).

      Delete
    4. Unfortunately no - which browser are you using? We're happy to look at specific reports and suggestions: https://lastpass.com/supportticket.php

      Delete
    5. craPkit, USB dongle can not unlock your locked computer.
If you mean boot from USB bypassing your account's password, then your icon won't make any difference.

      Delete
    6. I'm using Google Chrome on a Mac. I'll submit a feature request, but it's not a big deal if the ability to turn off the field icons on logoff doesn't get added.

  18. "Improved UX",
I now have to click 2 times (twice as much) in Chrome to get the list of the accounts I can use in this website/domain.

Android's input method still can't fill in website info, but at least it's less annoying when using it now.

  19. It sucks.. bring back the old ui for chrome.. it takes me more clicks to get what I want.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Is there something in particular that's more buried for you now? You can also turn on the old notifications via the LastPass Icon > Preferences > Notifications.

      Delete
    2. What about the ability to use the last pass icon to fill a form? Now we have to use "show matching sites" instead. I used both the notification bar (which I've now turned on courtesy of it being buried in advanced settings) and the button! The notification bar requires scrolling if you have 5-6 logins for an individual url. This is where the button was superior as it gave you the entire list, without scrolling, and at a glance! To perform the same previous action now requires TWO clicks. BAD UX.

      Delete
    3. Thanks Christopher - most notifications can be turned back on in LastPass Icon > Preferences > Notifications, and you can check the option in Advanced for show matching logins to be on the top-level menu again. Let us know if we can be of further help, we appreciate the honest feedback.

  22. Unless I'm missing a setting, I'd also like the old version back for my Chrome browser. 3 clicks now over previous 1 (with the red bar) is NOT an improvement in my book.
Also: any way to have a more compact pop-up? The items are now double-spaced which makes the pop-up cover almost 1/4 of my screen and take more mousing to get where I want.
Was there any user-testing before launch?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. Absolutely terrible.
More blind following of design trends and form over function.

      Delete
    2. The icons that show up in the fields on your websites are clickable - this should make it easier to get to your stored logins, generate new passwords, etc. We'd like to understand where you are still seeing issues, please submit specific reports for specific sites to the team: https://lastpass.com/supportticket.php so we can investigate with you.

    3. Yes, that big white box on the upper right covers a significant portion of my screen. Funny, but many sites have their login boxes there, too.

  23. Should've kept checking before I wrote. The red bar can be "reanimated" (for anybody else who wishes it back) by going to Preferences > Notifications > Show Fill Notification Bar.
    K. Now only the super-wide spaced out pop-up is an issue for me. Gee. Is that for fat-fingered tablet users?

      Delete
  24. Ugh, another app that double spaced everything wasting a ton of screen real estate. Why is every company doing this? Is it because the managers are getting older and losing their eyesight? There's no need to have a ton of whitespace; there's nothing wrong with single spacing a menu. At least have an option (even Gmail brought back 'Compact' view after many user complaints...)

    1. Thanks for the honest feedback, we'll continue to look at improvements.

    2. Or make it changeable (the spacing). On a touch screen device like a Surface Pro the extra spacing is welcome.

      Delete
    3. Yes! I think it's the opposite of adaptive design -- 1 fits all, just like {insert explative} Win8. Big, spaced-out menus for tablets/phones, that's completely out of context + not very user-friendly on non-tablets/phones.

      Delete
  25. Why are all groups expanded by default in android app? No way to minimize them that I have found. I'd much prefer to have an option to collapse my groups, and leave collapsed, I have many groups. Many.

  26. The UI is really nice and the spacing is more than welcome for touch screen devices, however, I really dislike how my passwords are now hidden under "Show Matching Sites". It might not sound like much, but the extra click is very annoying. Please provide an option so the passwords can be accessed from the main menu again.

  29. I also posted some feedback in your forums, but I think you guys have a way to go in the UI department. It is like you put a new theme of white/grey on the interface and called it good. Not much changed in how you have to drill down into the menu to go to a site. Also, where is the innnovation? You need something to separate you from the new competition out there.. iCloud Keychain, Password Box, Dashlane, etc. Really wish you would add a grid view for sites on the web interface with site icons/graphics.

Thank you for getting rid of the pop-up notification bar at the top. :)

Anyways, thanks for the updates but please keep them coming.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the way you drill down into the menus is a limitation of Chrome. Firefox more 'proper' menus..
But yes, I agree this is a bit of a lipstick on a pig.
Not to say that old theme was a pig, but this still feels like same old jQuery lib just with red buttons.
Hopefully this version puts down some sort of ground work for a more significant UI update.

I can't authenticate on my Android phone. I open LP, sign in, it asks for the two-factor code. So I launch Google authenticator, memorize the code, switch back to LP... and the code window has vanished, throwing me back to the login screen.

It's very, very difficult to reenter my details and login, then type in the Google Authenticator code before it expires!

This is not a problem only with LP but with every program that wants to authenticate with the same method on the mobile... Please, please at least make it stay in the Code screen!

  50. I generally like the new version. The only annoying thing so far is that the LastPass button in Chrome is now even more distracting. The icon is red and it shows this little number, which in my brain gets associated to some sort of alert I have to immediately respond to, as opposed to something I should just ignore 99% of the time. It looks similar for instance to the Gmail notification (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-mail-checker/mihcahmgecmbnbcchbopgniflfhgnkff?hl=en). Is there any way to customize the Chrome extension to stop showing me this little number? And is there any way to change the icon to a black-and-white variant, or something like this?

    1. Yep! Chrome extensions are extremely hackable. The CRX files are pretty much just ZIP files. Unzip the CRX and you've got yourself the source code and all of the resources, like the icon. Once you've made the changes you want, uninstall or disable the lastpass extension, check the "Developer Mode" checkbox, and use the newly available options to load up your modified version of LastPass.

Use Google to find out how to get the CRX file :) But it's the same file that gets downloaded to your computer when you install an extension.

    2. You can turn off the "ticker" in the LastPass Icon > Preferences > Advanced.

No way to change the background, but we'll take these into consideration, thanks for the thoughtful feedback.

  52. What is the procedure for changing my current password for a site and make last pass generate a new ( cryptographically ) secure password for that site?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Login to that site, go to the change password section for your settings for that account, on the change password form LastPass should prompt you to generate a new one, once complete and you submit the changes LastPass will ask you to confirm the update and replace the site entry in your vault with the new password. Let us know if you have trouble.

    3. Thanks for the update, Tobias - the in-field icons are meant to make things more accessible. If LastPass isn't giving you the data you need where you need it, we'd like specific details with specific URLs for us to test.

  57. Thank you for adding a search field in the browser toolbar button! That will making using LastPass so much easier.

I would like the option to bring the "Open Favorites" option back to the main menu, though. I use that feature a lot. Having it buried in a sub-menu is inconvenient.

  59. A few points regarding software of respect:

    1) Automatic updates; users simply do not have time to check for updates, for all software packages; good software packages always detect availability of updates and inform users about them;

    2) The About... function is normally in the Help menu, not Tools; LastPass should add About... in the main menu, after Help and Tools;

    3) LastPass does NOT work with Internet Explorer 11, which will become the most widely used browser pretty soon ('cuz it is part of Windows and all PCs sell with Windows installed!); does LastPass v3.0 work with Internet Explorer 11?

Thanks for the feedback about the "about" section, we'll consider this.

  61. Nice new UI within the toolbar. I'll reiterate some usability concerns that I hope you consider:

    1) Showing the number of matching sites draws far too much attention to the icon in Chrome. It distracts from the web page I'm visiting. I would prefer this not be the default behavior.

    2) Hiding the matching sites under another click in the menu makes Lastpass harder to use. I see you can change this in Preferences, Advanced, check "Show Matching Sites in top level menu". IMHO, that should be checked by default.

    Thanks for listening.

    2. Thanks Brian, this is probably the most common feedback we've received to date, so you're not alone :).

      1. This can be turned off in the LastPass Icon > Prefs > Notifications, we'll consider turning off by default.

      2. We'll also consider this. We want the clickable field menus to be your first choice, and quicker, but understand that the LastPass icon menu needs to be usable, too.

  65. The update looks good, but the Chrome plugin still lacks the feature where you can filter your matching results for the domain/page you're on. That feature's really helpful as I have some things (like hosting accounts) where I manage dozens of accounts.

    1. The "show matching logins" shows your results for the domain/page you're on. You can put this in the top-level menu again with the option in the LastPass Icon > Preferences > Advanced. Let us know if we can be of further help.

      Delete
    2. You can add it, but it's not filterable. If it gives me a list of two dozen clients, I want to be able to filter the list (like I can do with the Firefox LastPass).

After playing with the field icons, it appears that I can filter from there, though.

  66. I'm now having trouble logging in to my Google account ( https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLoginAuth ). I have 3 account choices when I log in and I have a password that LastPass doesn't know for Google and I hand-enter it.

When I do this, logging in fails. If I log out of LastPass and log in to the Google account, everything works fine.

  67. I like that the product is getting improved, it has been a long time coming. Unfortunately, this update has completely broken the usability for us. We have a number of links that go to the same url but with different account info, and now those links don't work because LP is putting in random stuff into the fields even though they are setup in the links (like ip address in the hostname field, etc.). Using the 'similar sites' dropdown only makes things worse.

I know this is an edge case, but since we use this for production work we are hosed. Is there a way to "downgrade" back to the 2.x version? I'm the only one in the company with the old version and the only one that can do any work. I won't have any other option than switch to a different provider unless we find a workaround...

I've put in a ticket already, not sure what else to do here.

  68. The number notification is distracting for me. I've tried disabling notifications, but it still appears over the Lastpass icon?

  69. 1) Android app won't scroll the LastPass login screen, so my red login button is NOT VISIBLE unless close my phone and I turn my device into portrait view. (Some of us don't use a 5" phone you know. I'm using a Motorola Droid 2.)

    2) Meanwhile, on my computer... as conveniently placed as it might be for a new site to add, I do not need the LP icon on every single fill-in form of every site I visit.

Specifically, it's coming up on search forms on my knitting social network site Ravelry. And I clicked the disable LP for this site, and it disables my login to Ravelry too! Aagh!

I headed over here to read the blog and comment, because I need to be able to login. I do NOT want to see the LP icon on every type of form field box by default.

I really appreciate Last Pass, and other than these glitches (which I expect a speedy fix), while it may take me some time to get used to the new features, I'm happy to see new development.

P.S. Android browser integration would be awesome (in XMarks too.)

  70. The ability to generate password seems to be lost in the Android update.

I used this feature very frequently (when signing up to websites on my phone). Frankly LastPass's usefulness will be significantly diminished for me without this.

    Please restore this feature. Thanks!

  72. This is really bad in Firefox. I find that I have a lot more buttons to press because it doesn't seem to "see" the sites like it did before. Is there a way to revert back?

I used to love this but now I don't seem to be able to log in w/ it filling out information easy.

  73. I just read this entire thread because, clearly, I have nothing else going on. Good stuff. I was a little troubled by the update until I stumbled on the Preferences/ Advanced/ "Show Matching Sites in top level menu" tweak. Now all is well. Kind of impressed with Amber Gott, though. That was a pretty rugged afternoon of tech support and hand holding. "I hate it! I love it! You've ruined everything!" and so on. Way to hang in there, Amber.

  74. Wow. Both the iOS app and the browser plugin on Chrome/OS X have basically broken the application for me. You guys might be all excited about it, me, I'm hanging out for the rollback to the previous version.

  75. Lastpass - what have you done!!??

If I try to edit a username in a login box (I do this as I support several users at the same domain, and don't want to save their passwords), as soon as I start typing anywhere in the username/login name, Lastpass pops up and move the cursor to the end of the line, and won't even allow the HOME key to be pressed. Please fix!!

  76. There is no way for me to disable the really annoying 'generate password' box that always appears.
Also, Lastpass now offers to remember a password at the wrong point in time. It used to offer to remember a password after a successful login, so the user is 100% sure they are storing the correct password. Now, it offers to store a password before the user has had a chance to successfully login to make sure that the password is correct. That is very, very annoying. Not to mention the fact that it covers part of the screen now, which is very intrusive. The old Lastpass thin bar at the top of the screen was far superior.

    ReplyDelete
  77. It's pretty intrusive. In PayPal it overlays date selector fields with "form fill" options, what's with that? Also it doesn't appear to respect the request not to fill for certain sites. For example I don't use LastPass for things like SagePay log in. Yet I can't fill fields without the red bar showing up for each field no matter how many times I disable for site or page. I'd been keen to get 2.5 back but your previous versions link for that installer is dead, can you get it fixed?

    ReplyDelete
  78. How can I revert to a previous version of the Chrome extension?

The new version looks good and all that, and the form fill functionality probably works some places, but for me and many of the sites I visit it's just a PITA (breaks option fields in JIRA, breaks my onlinebank, tons of visual glitches, etc) and since it's impossible to disable I either have the option of removing LastPass or stop filling in forms.

  80. Aside from the new design which I think is just to please some idiot iOS users, I have a grievance with the functionality.

With the old version, I could click the lastpass icon in the browser and the dropdown would list all my data for that site I am on so I could select it and log in.

With the new version I have to click that icon, then click a submenu, and since the submenu is now a size suitable for giant American fatty fingers, only about half of the entries fit on my screen.

This makes lastpass functionally crippled to me, and many others, I believe.

Please make it possible to keep using the old extensions or please bring back the old functionality in the new version.

Please make an option to not have this childish 1" lineheight stuff in LastPass in Chrome.

The new LastPass is a step backwards in functionality, and in regards to visuals I believe it is just to please iOS users.
